Planet Strike - Thoughts about daemons
I have reread the Daemon Codex carefully and I think I klnow what went wrong (see previous post). Daemons have a Daemonic Assault, which is treated using the Deep Strike rules. However, no daemons are listed in the OOB as Deep Strike but as Daemons (hence daemonic assault). If you assume that Daemonic Assault is Not Deep Strike then no daemonic units can assault on first turn, indeed, many have to land off table.
That severely restricts the daemon army in Planet Strike and stops it running wild on turn one.
Problem solved.

Exactly what I was thinking, glad it turned out to be true. The game you posted sounded like it wasn't much fun. I'm just finishing building up a bastion so we'll see if I can't get a game in.
ReplyDeleteThe counter-argument I've seen: the Planetstrike book lists Assault marines as one of the units that can assault after DSing onto the battlefield, but the marines themselves don't actually have the Deep Strike rule, but rather inherit it thanks to their Jump Infantry type.
ReplyDeleteIn response to anonymous:
ReplyDeleteEven if they had to inherit it, the Assault Marines have deep strike due to their jump infantry status. Demons do not have it, but they have something LIKE it. They use the DS rules to resolve the effects of being demons, but do not actually deepstrike in the literal sense.
This is not a counter argument, but rather something unrelated, IMO. We're talking about demons here, not SM.
Dear Anonymous
ReplyDeleteIn the Planet Strike Rulebook, only units that are special Deep Strike units in their own codex, not the Planet Strike list, get the first turn assault advantage. This is a critical distinction. I am simply arguing that daemons are not deep-strike in their own codex but daemonic assault - and that I was, therefore, wrong to assume that the two are synonymous simply because they use the same rules.

the GW website gives examples of studio gamers playing with each army and listing pros and cons. the daemon example clealy indicate deep strike assualts....
ReplyDeleteI think going for such a strict RAW intepretation is a mistake with Planetstrike. That, and the intent is clearly that troops that normally arrive via Deep Strike be able to assault after doing so.
ReplyDeleteOn the GW site they state Pros and Cons for each army in a Planetstrike article. Pro for daemons- Whole army has deepstrike and can assault turn 1.
ReplyDeletecold all this just be because you all just dont like daemons
ReplyDeleteif demons don't count as deep striking then they would not mishap
ReplyDeleteThe rule is poorly written, but the intent is clear that CD army can assault after DS. It is shown all over the website and played in this manner at the GW stores. Until an 'official' FAQ comes out, expect some non-CD players attempt to lawyer up on this.
