Mongoose Games have announced that they are to relaunch a Judge Dredd miniatures game.

This will apparently be bigger and better in every way than the old Gangs of Mega City One. There will apparently be new minis as well as rerelease of old ones.
The rules will be posted free on the Mongoose website, which seems something of a change from their usual business model.
This is possibly connected with the new Dredd movie by DNA films (Love Actually) out in 2012.
Mongoose have an indifferent record on miniature games. Some of us still remember Starship Troopers but I await events with interest.

An interesting move on their part. I wonder if it will be based on their Battlefield Evolution system.
ReplyDeleteAh Starship Troopers. I loved that game. I would still play it if I had anyone to play with.
Dear Rabid
ReplyDeleteYou are not alone in that observation.
John
Starship troopers another blast from the past. I bought a bunch of the models and before I could get them built all the local players stopped playing.
ReplyDeleteI got burned 3 times by Mongoose Publishing - Starship Troopers, Babylon 5 ACTA and BF Evolution. I will never support them again. I cannot say I wish them well either.
ReplyDeleteDear Colkillgore
ReplyDeleteThat's more or less what happened to me.
J
Dear Cyborg & AC
ReplyDeleteYes, Mongoose lacked the capacity for long term support. Their business model is launch game, sell until initial sales drop, then pull out.
I thought they were clean out of the miniatures business.
I may get the models as the rules will be free but I will not assume any follow up.
John
I always thought it was such a shame that ST wasn't better supported - the game rules were excellent, but the models, with a few exceptions, I thought were quite poor. In particular, I think its no coincidence that you still find the odd 'skinnies' boxset for half price in Forbidden Planet.
ReplyDeleteSo, this is some great news on two scores - a new JD game, and a new version of the film! Hopefully this one will be more true to the comic than the Stallone effort.
Re. the game, does anyone know if Andy Chambers is still working for Mongoose in a rule writing capacity?
Dear Pacific
ReplyDeleteYes, the Gangs models were made from that ghastly soft plastic that won't glue or take paint. I believe the ST models had a similar problem.
I hope Mongoose have moved on but we shall see.
RE: Andy Chambers. I don't know.
John
Pacific,
ReplyDeleteAndy Chambers never really worked for Mongoose. Mongoose purchased some rules that Chambers wrote, but that was it. (Which is why the rules for SST are so good, I think.)
Dear Rabid
ReplyDeleteI did not know that. It makes sense. Mongoose are surely based in the USA.
John
Dear John
ReplyDeleteSwindon, actually. Although I believe they have printers in the US as well as the UK, or at least they used to.
Interestingly, last I heard of Andy Chambers he was working on StarCraft 2 for the last few years.
