Seond Hand 40K

I desired to add a Hellbrute to my small Khorne Berserker army but the old bank account has taken a bit of a dive this month due to storm damage from the winter gales on my roof so funds for military expenditure were restricted.

However, eBay is full of second hand models from GW starter kits offered at very reasonable prices. I picked up this model for about one third new price. I chose one that had been painted flat red and black so it could easily be overpainted without another layer of undercoat. I also opened and reglued a joint that had come loose and changed the basing to match my army.

I will probably add trophies to the arm chains when time permits.

All told, this was achieved in a single evenings modelling.

Is it as good as a new bespoke Hellbrute, lovingly painted? Of course not.

Is it a usable model at a budget price and a few hours work? Hell yes!

Chaos Sorcerous Flyer

I have been cleaning out my model stores and came across this. It was a it battered but soom responded to a little TLC - and a lot of superglue.

It is a Chaos flyer held aloft by sorcerous energies - use Valkyrie rules.

Zhufor Khorne Lord

As the prous owner of IG8, I decided to try to finish up my armies from IG 5-7.

This is the Zhufor Khorne Lord figure from Forge World mounted on a bought in resin base. I left his cloak off because it just did not look right.

It is painted in Humbrol Railway Acrylic with layers of Revell Fiery Red on top. I am no Golden Daemon painter by any means but I do think I am starting to get the hang of this layering lark. The brass is painted with Citadel Black/ TinBitz/ Shining Gold and the trophy skeleton's coat from the dark and medium bluw from the Citadel Foundation range.

More pics below.

Blood Pact Infantry

I picked up some Pig Iron Feral Militia who are just perfect for Chaos Blood Pact troops. They have a wonderful ragged look plus bizarre masks.

Pig Iron have just released special weapon militia models - oh joy.

They are also a good source of heads and weapons as seperate items.

I highly recommend them. You can find their address on the side bar of this page.

I am still experimenting with paint layering rather than drybrushing-inking. The technique fascinates me but I definitely need more practice.

Blood Pact Urdeshi Usurper SPG with U90 Assault Cannon

I put up the basic-painted version of this model earlier.

This is my definitely final finished version. I have added Blood Pact decoration including the fresh, legless corpse of a Guardsman. A Blood Pact Trooper has cut his hands off for souvenirs.

This tank can be played as a Leman Russ but makes a better light super-heavy tank (good grief, I sound like a WRG Army List - Light Heavy Infantry etc.) based on a Malcador with a Basilisk gun capable of direct fire only.

Blood Pact Urdeshi STeG 4 Light Armoured Car

So here it is, finally, the Blood Pact Urdeshi battle car. I will probably play it as a Hellhound or the other one that sprays toxic acid. That seems to me to be very Blood Pact.

I have gone again for a badly maintained, dirty, rusty workhorse. This is the equivalent of a Vauxhall Viva that has been too many times around the M25 and too few times into the workshop.

I have made it a half-track conversion of the sort that were used in Russia in Winter. They took the wheels off and slotted on tracks. The kit is of a Russian copy of a British vehicle from the mid Wars period.

Blood Pact Urdesh N20 Pattern Half Track

I showed an early version of this model a few weeks ago.

It is kitbashed from a Revell WWII German Artillery Tractor, Catachans, various GW bitz and MiniMax Traitor Legionairres. The armoured cab is scratch built.

The N20 is described in the Gaunt's Ghost series and The Sabbat Worlds Crusade Source Book, both by Dan Abnett.

The Blood Pact are not known for their strict adherence to maintenance schedules and never wash and wax their AFVs.

My thanks to the blogger who suggested putting soot on the bonnet under the flame-thrower.

I have put a pic on Cool Mini or not:

Blood Slaughterer - Forge World

These are pics of my latest model, the Khorne Blood Slaughterer.

This is a very delicate model - I have already had to repin a leg after battle damage.

It is an extremely well designed kit but I get the feeling that it was intended as a display model rather than a gaming piece.

Red is a swine to layer. The carapace was achieved by a mixture of terracotta and bright red in various mixtures with layers of Citadel red wash. I used Tin Bitz/Shining Gold layers to create a tarnished look for the brass, especially around the bolts.

Forge World use grey colours for the mechanical bits (see below) but I decided to go for a less realword more shiny daemonic look. I kept the mechanics fairly simple. One could go to town on them but I think it would look messy.

Khorne Lord

I needed a Khorne Lord for my Siege of Vrak II army.

I picked up an old battered model on eBay for a couple of quid. It was a bit bent and had an odd paint job. I decided to give it a quick respray and then use layering rather than drybrushing to repaint it - as the contours were already flattened and I needed it toute suite so could not face stripping the model. I am quite pleased with it, given the limitations.

Siege of Vrak II Renegades

I have been creating some new troop types for the Renegade Army List from the Siege of Vrak Volume II.

Here are two 20-strong units.

Beatmen are a new troop type. These are old Warhammer beastmen that can be bought for a song on the web. The pose really suits a 40K army. The shooters are mostly cut down lasguns and the 'skull' resin bases are from Foundations of War.

The Khorne Berserkers are an elite choice. This is my bBand of Brass unit (as opposed to Bass Brand). The 'rock' resin bases are again from Foundations of War.

The forty resin bases cost me £8 plus postage. What a bargain.

Soul Grinder

It has taken me a year but I have finally finished my Soul Grinder. It's pretty much straight out of the box except for the addition of some chaos and Khorne icons.

I decided to use multiple layers rather than detail to get the impression of a living machine slowly morphing into a Khorne daemon.

I only have a Tzeentch chariot to do and my army is finished. I intend to have it pulled by giant seahorses.

Juggar of Khorne

Two suns, three moons and a partridge in a pear tree have been seen in the sky over Vrak.

By the pricking of my thumbs, something evil this way comes.

Cue Vincent Price.

Skulltaker

I have been collecting a Daemon army for 40K when it occured to me that I could also use it for Warhammer Fantasy. Unfortunately, I had used the round bases! So I have been rebasing the whole %$$%£$ lot on square bases. Sigh.

Memo to self: Base your daemons on square bases and you can use them in both warhammer games; base them on round bases and you are limited to 40K only.

Duh.

Anyway, here is the rebased Skulltaker, Herald of Korne.
