Saqqara Ur-Damak Thresh Word Bearers Kill Team

The Kill Team

Saqqara Ur-Damak Thresh is a Diabolist (Master of Possessions) of the Seventh Choir of the Word Bearers Legion.

He is charged by the Dark Council of Sicarus (leaders of the Word bearers) with the assassination of Fabius Bile, Chief Apothecary of the Emperor's Children legion after a falling out.

Saqqara assembles a team of Pahas-Bel (Lord of Discord), Buvala (Exalted Champion), the Irib Squad of chaos marines, two Blessed (Obliterators), and two Gal Vorbak (Greater Possessed): <50 power points.

Word Bearers Lord Discordant

Lord Discordant mounted on A Helstalker Daemon Engine

This is fundamentally the same paint scheme as the Word Bearer Lord 'I made earlier'.

The base is painted with Green Stuff World Colorshift paint. This is an iridescent paint depending on fine structure to bounce varying wavelengths of light in different directions - in this case red-green.

The effect is of a warp energy field with different shades of colour depending on light source direction and angle of observation. It doesn't really come over in static photos.

Note the difference in colour from paint in shadow and direct light.

Word Bearers Champion

Bad Attitude

This is one of those excess leader models from boxed sets that are all over EBay for modest sums.

I picked this one up and decided to try out a Word Bearer paint scheme.

Rear View

I wanted to give him a dirty, kicked 'round the galaxy a bit, look. I see the Word Bearers as not very style conscious - not committed to any God of the warp and such.

I used Red Goblin Colorshift paint from Green Stuff World on the base as it gives the impression of dark warp energy swirling around the Word Bearers feet.

A Dose Of Plasma Solves Most Issues

I quite like the colour scheme and may paint a few more....just for the fun of it.

And It's Goodbye From Him

Creations of Fabius Bile: Slaaneshi Cult

Cult Of The Iridescent Wings

The final unit to add to my 'Creations of Fabius Bile' Warband is a Slaaneshi Cult of The Iridescent Wings - a group of radical avant garde artists who have gone just a leetle too far in their love of bright new abstract art to sweep away the fuddy-duddy Imperial Realism style.

I play these just as ordinary cultists from the Chaos Marine Codex.

Yes, they look the part of elite troops, being fabulously wealthy from selling their art to decadent aristos and so able to afford the finest black market weapons BUT they are artists, for Emperor's sake, not Imperial Guard or even a Hive Gang.

Cult Leader

The Supreme Creative, as the Cult Leader is grandly named carries an electrified staff of authority (brutal combat weapon) and an autopistol.

Long Weapon

Any model armed with a long barrelled weapon is deemed to be armed with an autogun.

Note the iridescent sheen on his greatcoat.

Pistols

Models with pistol(s) are deemed to have an autopistol and brutal assault weapon.

Flamer

The hand-flamer is treated as a 'flamer' for the purposes of game play.

It spews out iridescent purple flames in honour of Slannesh.

Emperor's Children Venom Crawler

Poised To Strike

Another unit for my 12th Company Emperor's children allied with Fabius Bile.

Side view showing the cannon.

Colour blending was done using a stippling technique.

My Fabius base models are decorated with dried mud and the odd bush and desert flower.

Fabius Bile: Savona, Commander 12th Co., Emperor's Children

Savona - New Weapon

Savona is one of the two characters who survived the disaster of Fabius' last battle with the Thirteen Scars as described in Josh Renolds last book for Black Library.

To quote the Lexicanum:

'Born to the family to the Imperial Governor on an Agri-World... she  began her career in the Legion as one of their Serfs, but that changed when she was gifted with semi-sentient Daemonic battleplate from her master Kasperos Telmar. ... By M34 she was ranked 2nd in the Joybound, the elite guard of Telmar's warband....After The Shattering and Telmar's death, Savona joined Fabius Bile's Consortium warband. ... Following the events on Solemnace Savona was placed in charge of the remainder of the 12th'

Somewhere in the years between the final battle and Time Now, Savona has acquired a new weapon, a boltgun with a built in chain-saw.

The model is from HeresyLab: they make very nicely detailed resin models at reasonable prices - worth a look.

Fabius Bile: Saqqara Ur-Damak Thresh plus Greater Possessed

Saqqara Ur-Damak Thresh plus Greater Possessed

Saqqara Ur-Damak Thresh of the Word bearers was a diabolist who led an assassination squad, Fabulous Bill being the target.

The only survivor, Saqqara was forced into joining The Consortium of Fabius by poison bombs inserted in his body.

Saqqara disarmed these but identified with Bile being one of the few who stayed with the Apothecary through the battle with the Dark Eldar.

Following, Bile's escape from the Death Guard, Saqqara rejoined the mad doc's new warband as the resident diabolist,

On another note, I think I am getting better at this stippling lark but I definitely need a more suitable brush. One is on order.

Fabius Bile's Creations

Fabulous Bill With Escort

Having finished Fabby Vile and his Little Friend I have set about creating a small warband with which he can smite his foes, a force of Renegade Marines that have turned to Slaanesh - cue maniacal laughter.

Slaaneshi Chaos Marines

First up is a straightforward Chaos Marine squad in the colours of the Dark Prince. It's a fire support team with an autocannon.

Noise Marines

My second unit is a squad of Noise Marines with a kitbashed sonic weapon. One can't get sonic weapon parts at the moment - there's a war on, you know.

Sonic Weapon

The sonic weapon started life as a plasma gun with various bits added to suggest a loudspeaker of the sort one finds on poles at outdoor events.

Speaker

The business end with targeting lens etc.

Stippling 1

I experimented with a stippling dry brush method to create wild, clashing colour blends suitable for followers of The God of Excess. I didn't really have a suitable brush and made a few missteps.

Stippling 2

I think I started to get better towards the end.

Golden Weapons

Golden weapons, what else for the Prince of Luxury?

Review: New Plastic Fabius Bile

Fabulous Vile and Igor

Fabius is one of my favourite 40K characters. I really identify with mad scientists especially BioGeek mad scientist gene jockeys. The metal model was not great so I had my order in early when a new plastic version was announced, especially as he came with his very own Igor.

The Postman Knocks Twice

I bought the model with a copy of the new accompanying supplement, more about that later. Fabius and Igor came in a box, raising my expectations of the goodies inside.

The Sprue

Opening the box was a let down. I mean, £25 for a single little sprue to build two big models: 21 pieces in total!!! Igor was only five pieces, one of which was a base.

Dynamism

The poses are very dynamic.

Fabulous is caught in the act of stepping forward, pushing off with his stick - Torment, Needler hanging loosely in one hand.

Igor is crouched over a space marine holding a strange semi-organic gribbley machine, presumably extracting geneseed.

Striding Out

Actually, when the models are assembled and painted they look pretty good.

I think my initial disappointment was because I have been painting new Tamiya 1:48 modern armour and it is amazing what you get in a box. Of course, wargame models are expensive compared to historical models so, on that basis, I am happy with my purchase.

One nice point: the new data sheet comes with the model. You don't need anything else to incorporate Fabius in your Chaos Marine army.

Brazen Beasts Renegade Marine Warband

Brazen Beasts Daemon Engines

There are many, many  Renegade Marine chapters that are not just pale copies of the Traitor legions but interesting warbands with unique properties.

One of these is the Brazen Beasts, who follow Khorne but are not World Eaters.

One there was a chapter of Space Marines called the Golden Blades. In M37, daemonic intrusion struck  the planet Ghahalla and its Golden Blades garrison force. Daemon engines spilled out of the warp. The Blades came up with a cunning plan, painting blood runes on the engines to bind the daemons therein and hence control the vile machines.

This gave the Blades a large daemon engine 'tank-park' for future use but, ah, blood runes!!! That's, um, chaos magic, innit? And we know what happens to those who use chaos magic. Yup, the Golden Blades became the Brazen Beasts.

Now it seems to me that you don't just suddenly in the middle of a battle decide to use chaos magic. Logic suggests there must have been a certain amount of preparation involved. You know, reading evil tomes bound in human skin, sacrificing chapter slaves and so on. It all looks like someone was corrupted way, way earlier and maybe, just maybe, the whole thing was a set up.

Maybe whoever bound the daemon engines had summoned them first? Just a thought.

Anyway, the USP of Brazen Beast Warbands is that they are led by Warpsmiths, the one above controls a Forgefiend, Hellbeast and and Venomcrawler. He also has a unit of Minor Engines (for which I use Kataphron Breacher rules).

Brazen Beast Warband Daemon Allies

Brazen Beast warbands are always daemon heavy, the concentration of engines weakening the barrier between the universe and the warp.

For some reason the original techmarine who corrupted the Blades' garrison favoured Khorne - hence magic runes rather than magic spells, I suppose.

So the daemon part of my warband has Bloodletters, a couple of  Chaos Spawn, and is led by a Khorne Daemon Prince....I think he's the original corrupting influence - or at least, one of them.

Brazen Beast Traitor Marines Led By An Exalted Champion

The Beasts operate in small sections of five warriors but are otherwise standard Khorne Berzerkers.

Small sections, because they have a manpower shortage.

On Vigilus, the Beasts were allied with Abbadon the Despoiler (no they're not very bright). They disabled laser batteries allowing Abbadon to bring ships in for a low orbit pass. Unfortunately, Abbadon sort of blasted the batteries before the beasts could exit the area. Friendly fire issues - always an issue. Anyway, hence the manpower shortage.

Khorne Beastmen Cultist Led By An Exalted Champion

Fortunately, manpower shortages can be somewhat alleviated by cannon fodder in the form of beastmen (using ordinary cultist rules).

Exalted champions are usually marines but they do not have to be. Unusually unpleasant and brutal 'commoners' can be upgraded by Khorne is they shed enough blood.

This army is about 75 power points as a straight Chaos Marine warband.

Throwing in a Helldrake, Breachers and megavolt Cultis brings it up to around 100.

And the army is finished, for the moment, but when the lockdown ends....I rather fancy a Lord of Discord riding a daemon engine.

Chaos Marine Venomcrawler Daemon Engine

Venomcrawler, Head At Left

The latest addition to my new chaos army and I am pretty much there with this little beauty.

Wonderful model of a mechanical, daemon engine, spider.

From The Rear

Finished in my new army colours of red and bronze: guess which Chaos God they favour?

I added am IG ammo box in camouflage green to give a splash of colour.

From The Left

And the head is building a tower of skulls in honour of 'you know who'.

Shadowspear: Master of Possession & Greater Possessed

Master of Possession & Greater Possessed

Picked up a few items second hand from the Shadowspear box for my new project.

I wanted them to reflect Khorne with a nod to the Black Legion.

I fear I may have overdone the colours a tad: I am mildly colourblind. Maybe green-yellow magical fire was a step too far.

What do you think?

Another Chance to See

The blue hide coat is a nod to my Blackstone Black Legion marines.

Servants of the Abyss: Chaos Marines

Lord Obsidius Mallex plus Bodyguards

More from the Blackstone Fortress sprues. A Chaos Lord with a small retinue - no double entendre intended.

Pink Plasma

I painted them as Black Legion Marines because I don't have any but have always liked the Gold and Black armour. I used to pose with John Player packets of fags as a twenty something with a sportscar.

Going Somewhere?

Freaked to see that my mate Andy Singleton was also using blue as the pelt colour for this model.

Review: Reaper Bones Pit Demon, Agramon - Khorne Daemon Prince

Agramon

IMPORTANT
Reaper Bones miniatures are made from a plastic polymer that can react with certain chemicals to form a 'tacky' surface that remains tacky even through layers of paint and varnish. These chemicals are often used as a propellant in paint spray cans. It is possible that they may also occur in acrylic paints with complicated solvents such as Mr Color or Tamiya.

Sword Added

The only modification was to drill out the left fist and add a sword. Otherwise the model is 'as it came'.

The model was painted with Vallejo Citadel acrylics, including contrast paints and washes, with no problems whatsoever.

I first washed it in black Nuln Oil to get in all the creases to deepen the 3D effect and then painted over with Contrast Blood Angel Red.

Highlights were added with Vallejo rust-orange Air.

Wings

I intend to use the model as a Khorne Daemon Prince for a little project I have in mind, but more about that later.

Agramon is smaller than a GW Daemon Prince but is still impressive compared to a space marine. The advantages of using the reaper model are: cheapness, easy storage, and robustness. IMO it also looks better than the GW model of which I have never been a great fan.

Available for about £10 from Reaper UK or various independent traders.

Highly recommended

Giant Mutated Armoured Nipples?

According to rumours doing the rounds on the Web of False Gossip, the above photo is supposed to be a reasonably accurate facsimile of a new plastic Magnus the Red mini.

It has giant mutated armoured nipples.

I mean how can an evil genius have giant mutated armoured nipples? Did Attila the Hun terrorise Rome wearing a massive steel bra? Did Hitler strike fear into Europe while boasting about the size of his nipples? Did Stalin sign endless death warrants sideways to avoid getting ink on his nipple shields?

Someone at GW has seriously lost the plot of this is true.

Chaos Marines

I sweated blood painting this lot but...I need the space and I have lots of marines.

To eBay, you go.
