The White Hell that is Kent

It has snowed in Southern England!!!! !
It doesn't snow in Kent. Naturally the whole transport system failed. Gatwick Airport shut, the trains were trapped (it turned out that the de-icing wagons had been sent in for maintenance by the railway company - December being the best time, you see) and the motorways were blocked with jack-knifed lorries.

  1. How much snow fallen? I'm guessing 10 inches?

  3. Sounds fun. We hit about 20" here but luckily they're a bit more prepared in Derbyshire (still ground to a halt for a bit though). I hear it even snowed in my old stomping ground of Dorset!

  6. Don't take this the wrong way..but I'm laughing. You see, I live in Canada and have yet to have seen a snowfall this year. Oh, I know it's coming and big time (anywhere between 4' and 6'). It's just the irony of it all is hard to resist.

  7. Almost every winter the first snow causes havoc here too, because the authorities always suprised by the snow. I smell incompetence in the air. :P

  8. We only had a few inches East of London but it still cuased chaos. All the back roads were ice rinks and few lorry drivers seemed inclined to adjust their speed (or stopping distances) to accmidate.

Most of the snow has gone now but bracing for more bad weather on the way.

A friend of mine has emigrated south - from Medway here, to Calger! Yep Calgery is just south of the Medway Towns, he tells me.

Certainly incompetence plays its part, but basically we get snow so infrequently that it is not worth having all the gear in place.

So Gravesend got it as well. I went down to Whitstable and there was nothing.

  15. Dear John

I'm sorry I meant, I smell the incompetence of the hungarian authorities not yours. I possibly can't judge that from here.
