7th Edition 40K: Really???

According to the rumour mill, 40K 7th edition will be with us this summer, or maybe not.

It seems only yesterday that they released 6th edition and started new codices.

I will probably pass and jump in on edition 8 or 9. I realised the other day that I have only played two or three games of 6th since it came out but I'm not sure why.

I guess I'm just bored with 40K. Endless tinkering is no substitute for new creative ideas particularly when the system hasn't settled down long enough to get to grips with. It's all getting a bit like Formula 1 where they produce a new reg shortening/widening the front wing by one cm in an effort to make it less of a procession.

  1. Another Evil Empire Marketing ploy. If they made the game right they would not need to tinker.... But now everyone has to buy the new rules and another £50 in their bank and out of yours!

  2. People only have so much money. I am just getting use to 6th edition if they change over it over to 7th edition, I will not get a copy until I can buy it at a steep discount. I can play other games like Flames of War. When Battlefront released a new edition they gave out free mini rulebooks to people who had purchased the previous edition's rulebook. I am still buying their models and not debating on if I want to purchase a book that might be out of use in three years.

  4. Not again.....:( I'm so glad I gave up on GW products years ago. Warhammer was ok and I had a couple of nice games, but I got tired of playing against beardy types and their uber armies. All that wonderful background that was never used.

    1. Steve, 40K has the strongest backstory of any SF/F game. I agree, wasted in pick-up competitive gaming.

  5. Personally - I do feel quite proud that - even now - there is still blood left to be squeezed out of that particular stone!

    1. You should feel proud, Rick. You created the best selling wargame of all time - by far. Whatever GW pretend or do, 40K will always be yours.

  7. I think that this whole rumor might be overly exaggerated, but it's still quite entertaining to read through everyone's theories and thoughts on the matter. And Rick: thanks for being the first to take a squeeze on that particular stone!

    1. Who knows, such is the paranoia around GW that I have even heard it suggested that this is a fake rumour ploy to unmask moles.

  8. GW's marketing policy reminds me of Electronic Arts' strategy; every year, their sports division pushes out the 'latest' incarnation of FIFA '11, '12, '13 etc, etc. Squeezing money from the punters' purses fir a product that is fundamentally unchanged; very cynical and very sad.

  9. In our gaming group we have decided to "freeze" GW in the magical 3rd-4th ed. era and when we do play (a few times a year) we will use codexes from that era (with whatever minis we choose ... so long as they are WYSIWYG). At any rate that is our proposal ... we haven't started in on it yet but we are all certainly opting out on 7th ed (as we pretty much did on 5th and 6th).
