Fings Wot I Find Useful
I am allergic to superglue vapour so I tried using high-viscosity superglue, which has reduced vapor. The problem is that it takes for ever to set so I bought some Zip Kicker accelerator.
You put the glue on one side of the join and the Kicker on the other and just press them together for an instant bond. This normally weakens the joint but I find that any weakness is offset by the high viscosity of the superglue. In any case, once you get a join, you can reinforce it if necessary.
The combination is great for glueing 'point' joins as it builds a collar a bit like epoxy resin.

My wife develops migraines from superglue vapor, so I tried odorless cyanoacrylates from Bob Smith Industries (sold at my LGS, branded with their own name) and I love that stuff. With zip kicker it would be 2x as great I'm sure.

I've used zip kicker for years, never had an issue with weak bonds. If you are worried about it, just the smallest vapor is needed to kick a glue joint. Spray the zip onto a hard surface & rest the part on the spray - it will be enough to set the glue.
ReplyDeleteI've not heard of Zip kicker, luckily Superglue doesn't have any effect on me, apart from the wallet!

ReplyDeleteSuperglue vapour is nasty stuff. It sets off a massive histamine reaction in my eyes and nose making my life miserable for days.
I though of using the vapour free but was concerned that the chemical causing the reaction might still be in the odourless vapour.

ReplyDeleteYes, it has been my experience that you need very little Kicker. I spray my finger aqnd then wipe on a trace. I have never had a problem with weak bonds either.

Dear Ray
ReplyDeleteBuy the stuff from trade suppliers. Hobby-shop superglue is expensive.

Spraying Zip Kicker on your fingers is not recommended. It, like many other hobby substances, is a mild carcinogen. It does smell kind of nice, though.
