Blade Runner Spinner - Chameleon Nanoflakes
This is a 28ml resin model of a Blade Runner Spinner. In order to give it an 'energy field' effect, I used acrylic varnish over the base paint saturated with Chameleon Nano-Flakes. They are intended to be used in a clear medium over black but I used it over deep blue and brown ochre. The micro-flakes are titanium compound covered silicon and cause a colour shimmer over the paint from copper to emerald green depending on the light interaction. It strikes me that the flakes could be great for power swords, holo-fields, force fields and so on. My next experiment will be to put them into the paint.

I've got to get some of them if only for the name! "Chameleon Nano-Flakes"...can you take them with milk and sugar? I feel one aught to be able to...
ReplyDeleteJohn - a question, there was a 'B-movie' doing the rounds in the late 80's which was one of those slightly better straight-to-video rip-offs of bigger movies, dealing with K Dick-like Dreaming Androids which were called 'Trancers'(I think), have you ever seen it and do you know what it was called?
The start involves a shoot-out in a speak-easy type diner in which one of the staff (and a customer - again - I think!) were 'outed' and er...Out'ed by the Deckart character who was played more as a Micky Spillane/pulp type!
Holy cow, that is a fantastic effect! I'm definitely going to have to see if my FLGS can get a hold of some. Brilliant work, I look forward to seeing how it works with other paint. Keep up the great work!
ReplyDeleteThose are beautiful John great experiment!
ReplyDeleteThere was a series of movies called Trancers. In fact the first one had Helen Hunt in it. Here's a link on IMDB: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0090192/
I like the effect you got with the nano lizards or whatever they are. Great paintjob all around. I like the model itself, too. I didn't know anyone made one for use with 28mm figures.

Dear Steve
ReplyDeleteI was pleased with it as a first attempt. It will take time to get the best out of the flakes.

Dear Mordian
ReplyDeleteYou don't need much. It tends to be sold in commercial quantities. I found a guy on eBay.co.uk who breaks a pack down into smaller units.

Dear Marverick
ReplyDeleteYou definitely don't want to eat these, or worse still, inhale them.

Very interesting effect! Do the flakes create much texture on the surface?
ReplyDeleteDear Mike
ReplyDeleteNone at all. They are incredibly fine and embedded in the carrier (Citadel gloss varnish in this case).
