Drought Continues
It is now drouting heavily in southern England so a hosepipe ban has been introduced. The pic was taken in Essex.
May I make a polite suggestion to the towering intellects who manage our super-duper privatised water companies, who are no doubt too busy counting their bonuses and pay rises to worry about the water supply, and who recently closed a London reservoir because it was ‘uneconomic’.
Dig some reservoirs and repair your leaking pipes you useless, incompetent, overpaid corporate tossers!

Great post, made me smile, and couldn't agree with you more – the rain has been "too little too late" I believe is the official response.
ReplyDeleteThe whole situation is a complete joke, recurring a little too often to be funny, especially when they keep putting their prices up.
20 years ago - while I was doing my degree - I was looking into the potential impact of privatising the water industry. One of the warnings issued by groups opposed to privatisation was that it would lead to a lack of strategic investment. The suggestion was roundly ridiculed by the the Government and the Press at the time... Guess who was right all along.
DeleteSpot on Lee!
DeletePrivatisation of water will be society's tipping point towards dystopian apocalypse.
DeleteTop post! Apparently 25% of water going through the UK's pipes is lost to leakage. What have the water companies done about it? Not a lot. Rather than drive down the cost of water, privatisation has created a price-fixing cartel that is milking the consumer. Bring back nationalised water and power!

ReplyDeleteClick the link to see how much your local water company allows to leak each year.
Luckily we have some nice big reservoirs up here, which still seem to be quite full

There was quite a good article on the bbc today about how much more rain we will need to get out of drought conditions. Better buy some wellies...

Dear Phil
ReplyDeleteBe fair, there aremore important uses for the money: corporate management bonuses, backhanders to politicians etc.

Dear EG
ReplyDeleteAt some point we are going to have to accept that below average rainfall happenens 50% of the time, and fix the problem.

Dear Ray
ReplyDeleteIt's enough to make a cat puke.

Hi John
ReplyDeleteJust out of interest and merely with a sense of fun just how "uneconomic" can a large hole in the ground full of water be? I take it they wern't taking it out by the bucket load and driving it round to their customers houses?
Dear Shaun
ReplyDeleteI believe the land was more valuable as building land. Of course, on that basis one should concrete over all of Southern England.
