Presents for John

If you want to get presents in the post, order them yourselves.

I really like Caesar Miniatures. They use a more sophisticated mould than Airfix so you get a better sculpted figure without the flash lines, which are a nightmare to get of polyethylene figures: you need a soldering iron and one little slip....

The figures come as individuals, not on a sprue, which I guess has got something to do with the mold.

  1. I haven't seen any in person, but from the boxes they do look nice. Whenever I've toyed with the idea of doing up a bunch of 1:72 guys those Caesar boxes are what I'm looking at!

  2. Caesar makes good figs and very interesting subjects as well. I think only HaT has a more varied repertoire. If only they used plastic that was slightly harder, like Italeri or Zvezda. One can only dream... You're thinking about the Helmand I assume...

  4. Dear Dimitri

Not sure about Helmand. Photgraphs sit continuously around the war memorial by my village church of local people killed in Blair's colonial wars.

Helmand was a display of ineptitude and incompetence by the Generals on a scale that would have embarrassed Haig.

    1. John,

one of the great insights of wargaming (and reading history in general) is that even if you do everything right, some young kids won't get to grow any older. When the Young Master gets old enough to understand (and provided he is interested in toy soldiers and such) I'll have him write a letter to a parent whose son died under his command. Sounds stupid, considering these are pieces of plastic on a tabletop. But I hope he'll understand something out of it.

    2. Dear Dimitri
      I think you are wise.
My father was terribly damaged by the war but is classed as a surviver.

    3. I tend to think along the same lines John, I will never conduct a Yugoslav/Balkans game, far too edgy for my mind and also some cobbers.

      Great purchase's however!

Haven't opened the box yet but I look forward to it.

  6. Instead of a soldering iron try a really sharp scalpel. Tricky but a bit more forgiving.
    Cheers

  7. Dear Joakim
Yes, I have switched to that method after the burns healed. The scalpel must be brand new and it is still tricky. Polyethelene seems to 'tear' rather than cut, like the skin on a rice pussing.

    1. A rice pussing...? Stange images in my head :-)
But, yes, polyethylene is not the easiest material to work with. But sometime you have to work with what is available.
