Red Arrows At Headcorn

The Red Arrows put in an appearance at the eadcorn model show.

Zooming high.

Low pass.

Things weren't quite what they seem. The two models are award winning display flyers. They cost around £10K each, if I heard correctly, and around £100 per flight in fuel and maintainence. Where does a model plane leave off and a drone begin?

  1. A good question.

There's a model airplane field down in IOwa across the road from where my friends' daughter plays soccer. We can sometimes see the planes flying over there. Nothing as shiny as these though.

    1. This is a big national show and RC planes are very popular here.

  2. I would imagine it wouldn't be too hard to fit a remote camera in one of those, then it's definitely drone territory!

    1. These days you can get a camera for a £100 helicopter - useful for checking roofs etc.

  3. Importantly, they are marked up as RAF aircraft. Not sure what the legal position there might be.

    1. I suppose as long as they are models it's OK. Not sure when you fit missiles though! But I expect you would be contravening more important laws than copyright. :)

  4. I think drone begins when it can stick a Hellfire missile through your toilet window when standing off at 3km!

    1. Yes, I suppose that is when it becomes an issue.
